What is it ?:
A guide book has been designed as a practical coaching resource capable of being adapted to suit varying time, space and skill constraints and is based on a logical progression of activities, skills and modified cricket games that are intended to maximise participation and enjoyment.
The main objectives of the MILO Have-A-Go Cricket programme are:
- To create an awareness and interest in the game of cricket and to follow this up by - encouraging children to play for their school or join a local club.
- To provide a stimulating environment that allows basic cricket skills to be taught through a planned progression of sessions. The emphasis is on fun and participation in a variety of play activities, drills and minor games using specially designed, safe, plastic equipment.
- To encourage parents to get actively involved in the game as supporters and coaches.
- To provide the positive first step in a child's (and his or her parents) long term participation and involvement in cricket.
MILO Have-A-Go Cricket is designed for beginners and incorporates high participation with skill development. It provides an opportunity to have fun and to learn the fundamental batting, bowling and fielding skills of the game. It does this through a series of planned sessions in which the children participate in a variety of activities and modified games.
MILO Have-A-Go Cricket represents the first step on both the New Zealand Cricket player and coach pathways [see below] and leads on to the already popular MILO Kiwi Cricket. Its success is based on involving and training parents as MILO Have-A-Go Cricket coaches so they have the knowledge and expertise to confidently organise and run the MILO Have-A-Go Cricket programme. The programme has shown that parents are keen to train as coaches, at the level of their children, and to become involved in organising and running the weekly sessions. Experience running this programme since 1999 has also shown that parents have also thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
