Hastings Tournament
Hastings Camp is awesome and you get to play heaps of games (six in four days). It's really fair - we play in age groups (boys & girls together) and get a pretty even turn at batting and bowling. There's no overall winner but we have an honours board each night for the rad stars of the day. I got on the honours board last year with a three wicket bag. I improved heaps ‘cos you get so much concentrated cricket. It's a great experience - you meet new friends at the Camp and get to know your team mates really well. We all get a special JCUH Hastings cap for representing the club.
The Camp runs for 4 days (afternoon, 2 whole days & a morning sometime between Jan 7th & 25th) and the weather is usually really hot so lots of us go to Splash Planet on the last day to cool off. We get dinner each night, cut lunch and breakfast in the morning & guess what - no dishes to do! There's a swimming pool at Camp and they usually arrange a couple of events - last year they had the owner of Laver & Wood come & make a bat from a piece of willow in front of our eyes. We play up a bit on the first night but on the second & third nights we're too pooped to party - so no pillow fights. They usually charge about $120 and the Coach & Manager stay with us at the Riverbend Christian Camp near Havelock North (we sleep one team to a room).
Mum & Dad love it ‘cos they get to stay at a nearby motel & don't need a babysitter 'cos I'm in Camp (at least one of them needs to come up with you). They pick me up from Camp in the morning & take me to the morning game. They usually watch the game, take me to the afternoon match if it's at a different ground and then run me back to Camp at the end of play. They sneak off from time to time to go shopping - yeah right! How many shops do you know that have tasting before you buy! They love Sileni & the Saturday Farmers’ Market.
Wanna go?? Try this line - "Mum/Dad, you both look tired. You need a holiday. How does a few days away in the sunny Hawkes Bay sound? You can visit a few vineyards, take a leisurely lunch, watch your child extend themselves in a friendly safe environment. You then say your goodnights before heading off for a romantic dinner for two. You deserve it!" Well it worked for me! So practice this line and look out for the Hastings Trials sometime in November at TMP.
