Hutt Valley Representative and Development Teams
Introduction:The Hutt Valley and Wellington have their own Rep teams. These teams are chosen from the Interzone games and are re-selected each year. The teams are chosen in late March and start playing in November. They continue to play right through to end March.
Grades:
U11, U12 and U13 teams will be chosen. The eligibility for each grade will depend on the child’s age as of September 1st at the start their season (ie 6 months after the Interzone games).
Practices:
Winter practices start in July at the Hutt Recreation indoor training centre (1st floor of the grandstand). Some coaches prefer to split the practices so only half the squad practice at any one time. Practices will continue throughout the season. Time and day will depend on the coach and the availability of the training centre.
Games:
12 children will be chosen to play each game. The coach will decide which children will be rested and that will most likely depend on the strength of the opposition and player availability.
All games start at 10.30am and will be 40 or 45 over depending on the age group. Most games are finished by 5pm. Players will be expected to retire when they reach a set number of runs. Full details of rules can be found in the Wellington Cricket Junior Cricket Handbook.
Rep teams can play up to 8 games (3 in November, 1 in December and 4 in March). However whether all these game occur depend on the availability of the opposition. Opposition teams include Wellington, Manawatu, Wairarapa, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay and Horowhenua/Kapiti.
Draw & Venues:
The draw will not be published in advance due to the late changes. Games will be played at home and away. Teams may be expected to travel to Wanganui, Palmerston North, Dannevirke, Masterton or Hastings.
Coaches and Managers:
These are usually volunteers and most often have a child in the team. Coaches should have at least a Level 1 Coaching Certificate (see Coaching – Courses on this website). Coaches are asked to apply for their positions and the Hutt Valley Representative committee makes final selections in June each year.
Cost:
Cricket Wellington will levy each player to cover the cost of hiring the LH training centre and for balls, etc. The levy does not cover the cost of games. The cost is about $40.
Development Squads:
There has been discussion in 2003 over the continuation of the Development Squads and the format of the whole squad process may change in the future. The number of games the Development squad receives depends almost entirely on the motivation of their coach. There are very few games organised by Cricket Wellington for development teams.
Since children develop at different rates it is likely that some children from the Development squad will move up to the Rep team.
