Have-A-Go Coaching

End of season goals for Coaches:

Please note – the goals outlined below are totally dependent on the skills and learning ability of the children in your team. They are not compulsory and you as a coach are under no obligation to achieve them. They are provided as a guide for you as a coach so you know your children have developed the skills necessary to advance to Midget grade.

For details on technique, games, etc see the Milo “Have-a-go” coaches handbook.

Batting
  • Children are clear whether they are right or left-handed.
  • The correct grip is used and children present the full face of the bat to the ball.
  • Stance is side-on, feet and body alignment is correct.
  • Backswing is straight back.
  • Children can hit a ball straight down the wicket off a batting tee.
  • Children can ‘pull’ a ball down legside off a high tee.
  • Batters can hit a stationary ball.
  • Batters move to the ball and attempt to hit it.
  • Children can run between wickets without colliding.
  • They know to get their bat on the ground and behind the first line (popping crease) when completing a run.
  • Non-strikers are ready to run and some may be starting to walk down the wicket once the bowler bowls (backing-up).
  • Some batters look for the second run and take it.
  • Batters know the 3 ways they can be out.
Bowling
  • Feet alignment is correct.
  • Basic “windmill” static bowling action is mastered.
  • Ball is released at ’11 o’clock’.
  • Throwing (bowling with bent elbow) is minimal.
  • Ball still bouncing when it reaches the batter.
  • Wides are less than 1/3rd of the total balls bowled.
Fielding
  • Players know to rotate positions.
  • Fielders move to the ball.
  • Players can demonstrate the basics of good throwing (side-on action, feet, use of wrist, arm and body).
  • Returns to the wicket are ‘reasonably’ accurate.
  • Children can ‘relay throw’ to retrieve a ball from the boundary.
  • Children know the correct use of hands when catching.
  • Some children can take catches.
  • Wicketkeepers stay with their wickets and put the stumps between them and the in-coming ball.
  • Children know what a run-out is and how it is achieved.
