Rules

for the Midget Grades

Midget Grades Playing Conditions:

Remember: the game is for the children, not the coaches and parents. Coaches are reminded to be as inclusive as possible of every team member:
  • This grade is for children aged from 7 – 8 (U9) as at 1 September of the season in question.
  • Games begin at 8.30am.
  • Games are 16 overs each side.
  • A soft ball such as an Incrediball is to be used.
  • A 18 metre pitch is to be used.
  • Each team will consist of a minimum of eight players.
  • The game is split into 2 innings. In the first innings each player from Team A bowls 1 over (6 balls) and the batting pair in Team B receives 2 overs and each player faces 6 balls. In the Second Innings team A returns to the field and each player bowls their remaining over (6 balls) and Team B returns to batting and each pair receives their remaining 2 overs with each player facing their last 6 balls.
  • Bowlers are permitted a maximum of two overs each. Bowlers bowl from one end only.
  • Fielders, including the wicketkeepter, rotate clockwise after each over.
  • Overs to be a maximum of six balls, no matter how many wides and/or no balls they include.
  • Wides and no balls count as one (1) extra runs to the batting side. If the batting team scores off wides (when the wicket keeper misses the ball) or no balls (either from hits off the bat, or byes/leg byes), those runs are to be added to the score as well. So, a no ball from which a batter hits a boundary would result in 5 runs to the batting team, four to the batter and one to extras.
  • A wide shall be called by the bowler's end umpire if the ball passes outside the junction of the popping crease and the return crease on both sides of the wicket and is not hit by the batter.
  • A no ball shall be called by the square leg umpire if the ball passes over the shoulder of the batter on the bounce when the batter is in his/her normal stance, or when the ball passes over the waist of the batter on the full when the batter is in his/her normal stance.
  • The two-bounce ball rule does NOT apply. If a delivery does not reach the batter he/she is permitted to have one free hit at the ball.
  • There are no front or back foot no balls. If bowlers are clearly having trouble reaching the other end of the pitch on the first bounce, the umpire at the bowler's end should assist by making a mark closer to the batter and advising the bowler to deliver the bal from there. This rule is NOT to be used to enable good bowlers to gain an advantage by delivering the ball from closer to the batter.
  • No fielders except the wicket keeper are permitted within 10 metres of the facing batter.
  • There are no LBWs.
  • There are no stumpings.
  • Batsmen cannot be given out first ball.
  • Boundaries are to be agreed upon by coaches before the game begins. The recommended distance is approximately 25 metres.
